Parents' Weekend Trip to Little Tupper Lake

An overnight trip to the Adirondacks, down to the southern end of Litttle Tupper Lake and partway down the outlet to Rock Pond.  Windy and cold, but fun.

Another year, another mini-fleet.

Its Parents' Weekend at Salisbury School, and we are well underway with eight skin-on-frame canoes to be completed this school-year. We have: set up our forms, laid the gunwales on the forms, fabricated and assembled the breasthooks and the stems and knees.  The stringers are all complete and are soaking or have already been tied temporarily to the forms.

Soaking stringers

Next week, we will start cranking out the ribs and get ready to start steam-bending them into the 'cage' created by the stringers.

End-of-summer overnight.

A quick trip to some new territory.  A little to the east on two of the three Saranac Lakes.  Started at the South Creek boat launch and headed out o to Middle Saranac.  I had hope to head up to Weller Pond, this is considered part of the area that is 'reserved campsites', so I took the Bartlett Carry over to Upper Saranac and camped at the southern tip of the lake.

I had planned to go further north, but the wind and chop made me reconsider and stay at the south end.  My campsite was the least of the designated sites (and also the only one free), but I don't take up much room and it was a pleasant, relaxing night.

Further From Home

An overnight trip up and back on the Oswegatchie River in upstate New York (I mean really upstate, not the Catskills). Camped at Buck Brook lean-to and paddled to High Falls and back to the car the next day.

Some rocks and small riffles, lots of beaver dams, big and small.

"Exam." Launching the boats on the front pond.

Two sections of the class. Not all shot at the same session.

Last Week of School: the Oxford Shell

I thought it would be worth a look at the Oxford Shell  (Chesapeake Light Craft), where we started and how close we are to finishing.  Un fortunately, the school year was not quite long enough, with all the other responsiblities for student/athletes, but we are in sight of the finish.  The young man building this has enough experience now to finish this up on his own.

Way back in the Fall, wiring together the hull.

Putting the deck together.

Today's effort: glassing the foredeck.

The cockpit.

Transom view.

One more deck to glass.

Foot stretcher.

Trying something new...

One of the boys wants to use his boat for fly-fishing and was looking for a way to get a more stable platform.  He put together a foam pontoon from art department left-overs and we did a trial with some wood pieces I had in the shop.  Too short to take a good paddle stroke, but we got some data and can try again.  He was actually able to stand in the boat with this set-up, though that is not really necessary for his purposes.

April 23rd Shop Walk-through

Getting closer.  Skinning is nearly done and coating to happen soon.  Still some details, to wrap up, like varnishing floorboards, rubrails and seats, as well as stem-bands.  Should have time to make some rudimentary paddles, though.
